The IGNIPUL Project aims to address the challenges related to research and innovation activities in the field of materials used in the railway sector.
In this context, the railway industry is one of the sectors where the incorporation of polymer matrix composite materials is becoming increasingly relevant. The lines of work in this field focus on extending the use of such materials to new components for both structural and non-structural applications, the introduction of recyclable materials, and the availability of a broader variety of materials that allow design adjustments to specific requirements.
Among the key needs are, for instance, compliance with fire performance and smoke toxicity requirements—areas where these materials currently show certain limitations. Expanding the use of composite materials therefore relies on the development of manufacturing methods and component types tailored to the railway sector. In this regard, particular emphasis is placed on achieving components with the right properties through different manufacturing processes, including pultrusion.
